PRESS RELEASE: A call to South African Government to intervene in Zimbabwe |

Tuesday, 15 April 2008 |
The Centre for Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) is a South African organisation that strives to eradicate torture and offer rehabilitation services to torture survivors. As a Human Rights Organisation we strongly condemn the delay in announcement of the full election results in Zimbabwe. This delay is reportedly causing panic, violence and an increase in the gross violation of human rights including torture.
As a signatory to UN Convention Against Torture and other Cruel and Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT), the Optional Protocol to CAT (OPCAT) as well as Robben Island Guidelines (ratified by the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights) we feel South Africa has an obligation to intervene. We call upon South Africa to join the international and regional call for the immediate release of the election results in Zimbabwe and to demand the cessation of any violations of human rights in Zimbabwe.
Since 2002 CSVR has seen an increase in tortured Zimbabweans coming to South Africa which has often been linked to elections. We anticipate that if nothing is done with the current situation we will again see an increase of torture and other gross violations of human rights in Zimbabwe.
We feel strongly that the will of Zimbabweans should be accepted and that their human rights be respected and look forward to a peaceful resolution of the current crisis.
