Consultancy Services
In addition to our core activities, CSVR staff and associates also provide consultancy services to a wide range of clients in the private and public sectors in South Africa and elsewhere. The range of services which we offer is broad and multi-disciplinary, reflecting the character of the Centre. Our services can be tailored to meet the needs of our client, and we often work in partnerships with other consulting organisations. We charge fees on a sliding scale, according to the features of the project and the level of the staff deployed.Some of our consultancy services include:
- strategic advice on crime prevention to companies, institutions and government;
- advice on reform of criminal justice agencies, particularly police and prisons;
- policy advice and policy development;
- specialist research in areas of crime, violence and reconciliation;
- project management of crime prevention projects;
- development of educational products (eg handbooks) and curricula;
- educational products in various media - film, print and radio;
- design and facilitation of workshops and processes of dialogue;
- provision of trauma counselling services and training in these skills;
- provision of trauma management skills training to organisations and institutions, including integration with medical aid and employee assistance programmes;
- victim-offender mediation services;
- training services;
Consultancy work undertaken by the Centre includes:
- Assistance with the drafting of the SA Government's National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS) in 1996.
- Assistance with the drafting of the SA Truth and Reconciliation Act, which established the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), in 1995.
- Assistance with the drafting of the SA Government Department of Safety and Security White Paper in 1998.
- Assisting the Institute for Democracy in SA (IDASA) with development of a crime prevention strategy for the Greater Pretoria Metropolitan Council.
- Assisting the Public Safety Department of the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council with research and drafting of the "Safer Cities" strategy for Johannesburg in 1997 and 1998.
- Assisting the provincial government of Gauteng Province with restructuring of the Department of Safety and Security in 1998.
- Working with the Institute for Democracy in SA (IDASA) to compile a directory of victim aid services in Greater Pretoria;
- Compiling an audit of activities related to violence against women in Gauteng province for the Gauteng government Department of Safety and Security in 1999;
- producing a 52 part series of television inserts for the Sport Against Crime campaign in South Africa in 1998;
- Drafting sections of the Final Report of the SA Truth and Reconciliation Commission;
- Conducting national research on youth crime for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1998;
- Running a reconciliation workshop on Rwanda in 2000, to consider the lessons of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission;
- Providing training on the Joint Universities Public Management Education Trust (JUPMET) Police Station Management Programme for Senior SAPS Station Managers in 1999 and 2000;
- Making input and writing the report of an international police conference on Public Order policing in Belgium in 2000;
- Providing training in Canada, Cyprus, Nepal and Egypt as part of the United Nations Early Warning Training Programme in 2000;
- Writing for Benetton Colors Magazine edition on refugees in 2000;
- Conducting research into farm killings and the SAPS Rural Protection Plan for the National Secretariat for Safety and Security in 2000;
- Conducting workshops for victims of torture in Northern Ireland in 2000;
- Conducting research into the feasibility of a Victim Compensation Scheme for the SA Law Commission in 2000;
- Presenting advice on witness protection to a range of interest groups in Indonesia in 2000;
- Conducting a School Holiday Programme as part of the youth crime prevention work of the Gauteng Department of Safety and Liaison in 1999;
- Providing Trauma Training to officials of the Department of Home Affairs in 2000;
- Conducting an audit of NGO activities relating to the prevention of violence against women in Gauteng for the Gauteng Department of Safety & Liaison in 1999;
- Facilitating an anti-corruption workshop for the Mpumalanga Provincial government in 2000;
- Research for television series (Loud and Proud) on youth and self-esteem in 2000;
- Review of safety-related Land Development Objectives for the Eastern Gauteng Services Council in 2000;
- Arranging a visit to South Africa for the Northern Ireland Victim Liaison Unit in 2000.
