Minority Report: The Imprisonment of Women and Girls in Gauteng
Almost 9 in 10 women in prison in Gauteng have experienced rape and domestic violence. In addition, they are seven times more likely than the general female population to have been raped before the age of fifteen. There is also a significant statistical relationship between women experiencing sexual abuse in their relationships and committing murder, as well as between being economically abused and engaging in theft.
These are just some of the key findings from a survey conducted at Johannesburg, Pretoria and Heidelburg women's prisons. The survey was funded by the Foundation for Human Rights and is the first piece of research in South Africa to quantify incarcerated women and girls' experiences of violence both prior to imprisonment, as well as within prison. Please join us to discuss the findings from our two research briefs Violence and Abuse in the lives of women and girls incarcerated at three Gauteng women's prisons and Minority Report: The imprisonment of women and girls in Gauteng.
