Jala Tsebo Seminar Series
Law, Custom, and Culture and the Impact on Women Seeking Redress for Domestic Violence
South Africa is home to a diversity of cultures and religions and as a result, many women and men live under dual legal systems. This may also put them in the position where their customs and values are, at times, in direct conflict with Roman-Dutch law and its provisions. Seeking help to address problems of domestic violence is made even more challenging under these circumstances. This seminar, drawing on a case study of responses to domestic violence in the Moretele District, explores some of these questions and puts forward suggestions around expanding protections from domestic violence in ways that accommodate the diversity of women.
