City Lights, Johannesburg Civic TheatreThe Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation would like to invite you to a full-day seminar on the theme of building respect for justice, the law, and human rights in South Africa.
As a country still emerging from an authoritarian political dispensation and affected by an ongoing crime crisis, South Africa faces major challenges in building respect for justice, the law, and human rights. This seminar examines issues reflecting the conflicts and tensions that are part of this process.
Papers to be launched at the seminar:
- The Zuma matter and the Criminal Justice System.
- Prosecutions for crimes of the past.
- Transformation and the independence of the judiciary.
- Respect for justice and the law.
- Three papers on issues pertaining to the human rights of victims, suspects and offenders including:
- The Sexual Offences Bill.
- Controlling the use of lethal force by police.
- The human rights of prisoners.
