Applications for Internship at CSVR

CSVR welcomes applications from people wishing to do an internship from South Africa and the rest of the world. Due to having been inundated with requests for internship, however, and in order to handle the process effectively, we have decided to review all applications on 15 October each year:

Applicants need to specify their area of interest/in which department they would like to be based in order to enable us to place them appropriately.

(A CSVR Internship Programme for South African Graduate Students is presently being developed. This programme will assist local interns with a stipend to cover living expenses while they are based at CSVR. It will also be designed to build the research capacity of interns while making effective use of their existing skills and knowledge. Until this programme is in place, CSVR will not be able to provide interns with financial assistance.)

Applications by interns should specify the following information:

1. Area of interest: Applicants should indicate whether they have a specific project in mind (which must fall clearly within the scope of one of CSVR's departments), or indicate which aspects of CSVR's work is of particular interest.

2. Content of work: What type of work are you willing/able to do? Interns have mainly been utilised in a research capacity (primary and secondary) as well as assisting with administrative tasks within a particular department. Other possibilities can also be considered.

3. Products: When involved in a specific research project, the goal should be to produce one or more of the following: research report (for internal publication), media articles, seminar, journal article, annotated bibliography.

4. Funding: Interns must organise their own sources of funding. CSVR can not contribute towards the income of interns. CSVR could assist in covering expenses related to the specific projects needs developed by interns.

5. Qualifications: Interns should preferably be post graduates with some relevant work experience or undergraduates with significant work experience. They should indicate specific skills and experience related to the area and type of work they want to pursue.

6. Knowledge and Background: Interns should show familiarity with the South African political context and some detailed knowledge of the specific project areas which they want to pursue. They should also provide some indication of commitment to principles of human rights, social justice and non-violent conflict resolution.

7. Period of internship: Interns should preferably be based at CSVR for at least two months.

8. Computer access: Interns should indicate if they can bring their own computer or other equipment (e.g. tape recorder) that they might need for their work.

9. Interns must provide CSVR with a CV when presenting an application.

All applications for internship should be addressed to the Human Resources Manager.
