Today, the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) joins the Government of South Africa, civil society, and the global community in commemorating the 49th anniversary of Youth Day in South Africa.
This year's theme, "Skills for the Changing World: Empowering Youth for Meaningful Economic Participation," echoes our shared responsibility to uplift young people. Let this day be a powerful reminder not only of the courage of our past but of the necessity to build a future where no young voice is marginalised.
We honour the memory of the brave students who participated in the 1976 Soweto Uprising, courageously protesting against the forced imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. Their defiance in the face of systemic oppression sparked a nationwide movement and played a pivotal role in the eventual dismantling of apartheid.
Today, we reflect on their legacy and acknowledge the significant progress made in advancing youth rights, education, and inclusion. We applaud the efforts of government, non-governmental organisations, and active citizens in creating opportunities for the youth of South Africa.
Yet, as we mark this solemn occasion, CSVR calls upon all stakeholders, including policymakers, educators, community leaders, and young people themselves, to remain resolute in the ongoing struggle for equity, justice, and empowerment. We urge meaningful investment in quality education, accessible mental health services, and sustainable employment pathways that honour the full potential of the young people of South Africa.
As we commemorate this important anniversary, let us reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that the bravery of the past continues to inspire bold and transformative action today. It is imperative that young voices are not only heard but actively engaged in shaping the policies and solutions that affect their lives. By promoting an environment where education is accessible, opportunities are equitable, and inclusion is the norm, we can truly empower the next generation to lead with confidence and purpose.
Together, we must build a future that honours the resilience and champions the aspirations of the young people of South Africa.
