Safety and Security in the Rural Parts of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Area

The aim of this report is to provide knowledge about the nature of crime in rural areas of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan local government so as to enhance the capacity of local authority and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to address rural safety needs. It also aims to explore crime prevention initiatives, broader role played by community organization, prevalent crimes, the role played by the security agencies, and presents an overview of strategies that are employed by both the Metropolitan Police and the SAPS in preventing crime.

Amanda Dissel
Amanda Dissel is an independent consultant in criminal justice and violence prevention issues. This research was conducted while she was Criminal Justice Programme Manager at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR). She has published on issues of human rights, conditions and treatment of detainees in prisons and police stations, juvenile and child justice, and violent crime.
