This booklet discusses sexual violence in South African correctional centres. It focuses on how to support victims of rape, and on how to prevent inmates from becoming victims in the first place. While this booklet considers the assistance, support and protection needed by both male and female victims, the main focus is on male victims.

Sasha Gear
Sasha Gear is a former CSVR Senior Researcher. She is Co-Director of the South African branch of Just Detention International. Sasha works closely with the South African Department of Correctional Services and civil society groups to address sexual abuse in detention and the associated health risks.
Heather Barclay
Heather Barclay is director of External Engagement at Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage.
